Protect your right to play: the FACTS |
For years, the politicians attacked YOU and YOUR right to play: |
- The Federal Department of Justice claimed that online poker was illegal under the Wire Act of 1961, so they confiscated money from private bank accounts of companies and individuals involved in online poker.
- They used Federal anti-racketeering laws to intimidate Internet service providers who allow access to poker sites, as well as magazines and television networks who accept advertising from online sites.
- The Federal government drove virtually all online pokers sites offshore through legal threats backed by Federal agents eliminating any chance that these sites could be licensed and regulated to protect American players.
- In 2006, Congress passed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) to shut down the offshore sites completely by threatening American companies who do business with them and take away your right to play poker online.

But things are starting to change: |
- Some enlightened political leaders around the country are beginning to join poker players to remedy this dangerous situation by legalizing online poker as the best way protect players and our right to play.
- Several members of Congress have introduced Federal legislation to study the benefits of online gambling and to change UIGEA. Such Federal changes in the law remain unlikely in the near future, but the fact that some Congressional members are supporting them is a good sign.
- Poker Voters of America is sponsoring legislation in California to legalize intrastate online poker there an option that Poker Voters discovered was available to individual states under UIGEA.
- Right now Poker Voters of America is applying the political expertise of the group's founders poker-playing political professionals with decades of experience in running successful campaigns at state and Federal levels to educate, persuade and mobilize poker players and other voters in California to support the legislation and make online poker legal in California.
